By increasing awareness and forming partnerships, counselors help students build career awareness, gain career exposure, and graduate with a myriad of career options, and a more informed life plan.

Career Development Beyond Job Titles: How K-12 is Using Challenges to Prepare Students for an Exciting Future
Presented by: JP Michel
The old paradigm of matching high school students to job titles is no longer serving us. The realities of our changing world of work demands that we help students look beyond job titles to find inspiring challenges to work on. This new approach to career education is called the Challenge mindset. For the last 3 years, thousands of students have been using the Challenge mindset to explore challenges to solve, the companies working on them, the people who work there, and what they need to learn to be able to do that. Teachers, guidance counsellors and district leaders have been leading this transformation in hundreds of schools. During this presentation, participants will learn about how K-12 leaders are using career education to promote equity, inclusion and achievement. We will explore three case studies as well as discuss student impact. Practical strategies and Challenge mindset activities will be discussed.

Developing Dynamic and Successful Mentor/Mentee Relationships
Presented by Courtney Warnsman
As career development professionals “inspire and empower individuals to achieve their career and life goals,” (NCDA Mission Statement) they tend to neglect their own goals. Practitioners often express a desire to look at their own careers. In this interactive session, we will examine the value of reciprocity in mentor/mentee relationships, identify what we each bring to the table as mentors as well as what we seek as mentees and explore how to cultivate dynamic and successful mentoring relationships.

The Human Skills Gap: Empowering Our Youth with the Missing Piece
Presented by Courtney Reilly and Chris Mackey
The potential of today's youth is immense, while the challenges they face to reach that promising future are real and daunting. To thrive in an unprecedented time of change and uncertainty requires skills that are durable, transferable, and most of all, uniquely human. The good news: every student already has a subset of these skills! The bad news: too many never realize it and their potential is sidelined.
Educators have an incredible opportunity to unlock the potential of our next generation. Making human skills a core - and explicit - part of the everyday classroom experience will lead to engagement, well-being, and thriving communities.
Chris Mackey and Courtney Reilly will share the experiences that drive their determination to equip today’s youth with human skills, and how they created Skillsline to fill the gap in knowledge and awareness of the human skills essential to a bright future for us all.

Innovation in Career Development: Helping Higher Ed Students Broaden Their Horizons by Looking Beyond Job Titles
Presented by JP Michel
The old paradigm of matching students to job titles is no longer serving us. The realities of our changing world of work demand that we help students look beyond job titles. Instead, we can help them to find inspiring challenges to work on. This new approach to career exploration is called the Challenge mindset. During this presentation, participants will learn about how career services leaders are using a Challenge mindset to promote equity. When students are asked “What do you want to do?” their answers reflect what they already know, thus reinforcing their status quo. By helping students explore through the lens of job titles, they broaden their horizons and discover new possibilities. For the last 5 years, more than 50,000 students have used the Challenge mindset to explore challenges to solve, the companies working on them, the people who work there, and what they need to learn to be able to do that. Join this session to explore how higher education institutions are using this approach to get results with their students, and how you can experiment with this approach on your campus.
About the Presenter:
JP Michel partners with career advisors to unlock new career possibilities for confused students. JP’s work in leadership and career development helped him create the Challenge mindset, an approach to career exploration now used in hundreds of schools and postsecondary institutions. Partners or Silos? Reimagining Education & Workforce Development
Presented by: Sarah Burns and Peter Callstrom
Too often, education and workforce systems operate in separate worlds. The school experience should prepare students for the world of work, yet far too many students are not exposed to a myriad of career possibilities – and they do not understand their unique strengths, interests, and values. The workforce development system then tries to support job seekers who are little prepared or unclear on what they want to do. The San Diego Workforce Partnership is collaborating with school districts across the county to disrupt this disconnect, providing training, tools, and strategies to support all students in accessing the world of work.

Working with Third Party Providers to Support International Students’ Career Development

The NCDA 2019 Webinar series presents:
Working with Third Party Providers to Support International Students’ Career Development
Presented by:
Kendra Northington, Kwan Segal, Elif Balin,
Nicole Anderson, and Sonia Liang
According to the survey research results of the NCDA International Student Services Committee (ISSC), there are consistent challenges in higher education to provide effective career services to international students. Some common struggles are the complexity of job and internship search processes, employer perceptions about international student work permit and visa procedures, and limited network and resources for international students in the U.S. The NCDA-ISSC recognizes the importance of addressing third-party service providers and resources outside of higher education settings that often emerge as a response to the unmet career development needs of international students. Third-party providers can be non-profit or for-profit organizations that offer career resources and job search platforms to international students. They also include technological platforms that disseminate or facilitate job opportunities in the U.S. and other countries.
Career development professionals need to become more familiar and competent with these services to assess their credibility and potential usefulness to meet international students’ career needs. This webinar aims to help career development professionals increase their awareness and gain more knowledge regarding the ethical and effective use of third party providers and resources as additional resources.
In this webinar, you’ll learn:
- the functions and trends of third-party providers in the U.S. and how they can address the challenges of supporting international students in the higher education setting;
- the various types of third-party providers that provide career services to international students, including the service features, pros and cons, and examples;
- how to make ethical and multiculturally competent decisions when working with third-party providers
