This session is presented by NCDA’s Veterans Committee. The speakers will share relevant resources and updates, to include current career development programs offered through the Veterans Administration (VA) and requirements for participation. Please join these NCDA committee co-chairs for this informative session.  


 
Presenters: 


 
Triva Watts Sanders is currently the Section Chief of VHA Rehabilitation Counseling Programs for the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center. She graduated from Alcorn State University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science. She then attended Jackson State University and obtained a master's degree in Rehabilitation Services. As she moved around and advanced in her career, she obtained a certificate from the University of Missouri-Columbia in Rehabilitation Administration, Certification as a Rehabilitation Counselor from the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification and International Certifications as a Job and Career Transition Coach and Job and Career Development Coach. She is a member of the National Rehabilitation Association, Louisiana Rehabilitation Association serving as the Regional Representative, National Career Development Association, National Association of Multicultural Concerns, Association of VA Vocational Rehabilitation Professionals serving in Member Recruitment, the Vicksburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, where she is currently serving as immediate past Financial Secretary, Order of Eastern Star- King Hiram Grand Lodge, Purple Heart Auxiliary, the Vicksburg Warren Alcorn State University Alumni Chapter (Recruitment Co-chair), outgoing Board President of the David L. Hubbard Foundation and she is a member of The Links, Incorporated where she currently serves as Chaplin.  


Elizabeth Williams identifies as an advocate for Veterans with impediments to employment. Additionally, she has served as a Rehabilitation Employment Specialist with the Louisiana Rehabilitation Service, a state advocate under the Louisiana Workforce Department for more than 20 years. Elizabeth is currently a federal advocate serving as a Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist with the Departments of Veterans Affairs, who have physical or mental impediments. She is currently a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin. Her goal is to assist veterans to reintegrate within the workforce, while simultaneously addressing their recovery. Elizabeth is employed with the Overton Brooks VA Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana and scheduled to graduate on May 10, 2025, with a master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling.  


Melva L. Washington-Jones is a Program Analyst with the Department of Veterans Affairs, Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. She’s worked for the VA for 12 years. Her employment began as an Administrative Support Assistant in the Vocational Rehabilitation Compensated Work Therapy Program under the Mental Health Care Line. She eventually became a Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist with the Transitional Work component at the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. She later transferred to the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center as a Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist/Counselor with the Community Based Employment Services component of the program. Being a retired MSgt from the U.S. Air Force Reserve, she could not only relate to the struggles Veterans face but also give back by helping her fellow comrades find their way back to a meaningful, purposeful life through employment. She later moved into a new position with the VA, but that hasn’t lessened her passion for helping her fellow Veterans with their pursuit of employment. Mrs. Washington-Jones also received her MBA with concentration in Accounting and Finance in 2011.
