Terms and Definitions
FCD (Facilitating Career Development) - FCD is the new term that describes the NCDA Facilitating Career Development training program. Individuals who complete this training program receive a Certificate of Completion. They are not referred to as FCDs or CDFs but rather an individual that has completed the NCDA Facilitating Career Development training program. This term is not a credential.
FCD-I (Facilitating Career Development Instructor) - FCD-I refers to an individual that has completed the NCDA Facilitating Career Development Instructor Training Program. This designation simply clarifies that an individual has completed the Instructor training program, has registered with NCDA as an instructor, and is eligible to train using the NCDA FCD curriculum. This term is not a credential.
CSP (Career Services Provider) - is a term used to describe an individual that successfully completed the NCDA Facilitating Career Development training program and received a Certificate of Completion. CSP, coined in 2017, replaced the term CDF or Career Development Facilitator. This term is not a credential.
CCSP (Certified Career Services Provider) - is a credential managed by the National Career Development Association’s Credentialing Commission. In order to use the term CCSP, an individual must complete an approved NCDA FCD Training Program and apply for and be awarded the credential through a competency-based assessment process. CCSPs must maintain their credential yearly and must submit 30 hours of continuing education every 3 years. The Continuing Education Manual explains the requirements in detail.
FCD Instructor Registry - The FCD Instructor Registry is managed by the National Career Development Association. The “Registry” is a list of instructors that have successfully completed the NCDA Facilitating Career Development Instructor Training program and are eligible to train using the NCDA Facilitating Career Development curriculum. In order to be listed on the “Registry” the instructor must adhere to the NCDA Code of Ethics, adhere to quality standards set by NCDA, and obtain appropriate continuing education as outlined by NCDA. An individual in the “Registry” must maintain their yearly membership at $50 per year and complete 75 hours of continuing education every 5-year period.
FCD Instructor Registry - Continuing Education Requirements - FCD Instructors listed on the “Registry” must complete 75 hours of continuing education during each 5 year period. Continuing education hours must focus on one of the 12 career development competencies. We adhere to continuing education guidelines set by the NCDA Credentialing Commission.
SCDA (School Career Development Advisor) - This term describes our newest NCDA Training Program. The SCDA is a training program designed for individuals who work in many settings and help prepare K-12 students for meaningful work and managing their careers. Individuals who complete the SCDA training program receive a Certificate of Completion. This term is not a credential.
SCDA-I (School Career Development Advisor Instructor) - This term refers to an individual that has completed the NCDA School Career Development Advisor Instructor Training Program. This designation simply clarifies that an individual has completed the Instructor training program, has registered with NCDA as an instructor, and is eligible to train using the NCDA SCDA curriculum. This term is not a credential.
CSCDA (Certified School Career Development Advisor) - CSCDA is a credential managed by the National Career Development’s Credentialing Commission. In order to use the term CCSP, an individual must complete an approved NCDA SCDA Training Program and apply for and be awarded the credential through a competency-based assessment process.
Certificate vs. Credential - A “certificate” is designed to acknowledge that an individual has completed one of NCDA’s Training Programs. A “credential” is designed to acknowledge that an individual has attained a specific level of education, completed an NCDA Training Program, and/or met additional education and experience requirements and has successfully completed the competency-based assessment required for each NCDA credential.
*no longer used* Career Development Facilitator (CDF) - CDF is the original term describing an individual who completed the original NCDA Career Development Facilitator training program (now Facilitating Career Development training program). CDF was also the original name of the credential managed by the Center for Credentialing and Education, Inc. (CCE). The term CDF was coined by the original curriculum writers in approximately 1992. The term CDF is no longer used by NCDA.
*no longer used* CDF-I - Career Development Facilitator Instructor - this term was originally used to describe an individual who completed an NCDA Instructor Training program and was eligible to teach the curriculum. The term CDF-I is no longer used.
Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF) - This credential, managed by the Center for Credentialing and Education, was originally known as the CDF credential. The Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE) added the word Global to reflect the growing popularity of the credential. The G was added in the early 2000s.
GCDF-I (Global Career Development Facilitator Instructor) - This term describes a credential managed by the Center for Credentialing and Education. It describes an individual that has been trained as an instructor and applied for and awarded the Instructor credential through CCE.
Curriculum Updates: Chapter 6 Multicultural Populations
The National Career Development Association is committed to providing the most up-to-date career development information available to those providing career development services. We recognized the NCDA FCD Chapter 6 - Providing Career Services to Multicultural Populations was significantly out-of-date. We believe this updated chapter better addresses this ever-changing and extremely important topic. We welcome your feedback as you begin using these new materials with your students.
Disclaimer:
Diversity, equity, and inclusion is an all-consuming topic that impacts communities and citizens across the world. NCDA tries its best to incorporate global perspectives within its materials. However, please note that the data, resources, and materials referenced in this chapter focus on U.S. perspectives. Because of this, we ask readers to consider the unique social and cultural issues and systems of oppression that exist in their own country in addition to the perspectives mentioned in this chapter. Additionally, the NCDA also recognizes that language and understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion are ever-changing and we endure to make every effort to keep this chapter updated to meet the changing times.

Continuing Education Requirements for FCD and SCDA Instructors
As an NCDA FCD Instructor you are required to obtain 75 hours of continuing education during your 5-year FCD Instructor Registry certificate period. You will be asked to submit your 75 hours of continuing education a month prior to your 5-year expiration date. Please maintain a file of your continuing education. It is possible you will be selected for an audit which means you will need to produce documentation to confirm your continuing education listed. Continuing education must focus on one of the 12 NCDA Career Competencies.
We follow the the NCDA Credentialing Commission's Guidelines for Continuing Education. This Continuing Education manual provides details on accepted forms of continuing education as well as the accepted number of hours. Please use this as your guideline when compiling your Continuing Education log sheet to submit at the end of your 5-year Instructor Registry certificate period.
We recommend that you maintain a simple spreadsheet to track your hours. We also recommend that you keep an electronic or physical folder of certificates, receipts, agendas, program books, etc. in the event you are audited. Sample Audit Log Sheet

Frequently Asked Questions
Does my FCD course require any face-to-face instruction?
Yes, all NCDA FCD courses require a minimum of 24 hours of face-to-face instruction. Face-to-face instruction is designed to allow the instructor to observe and coach students on the Helping Skills and Training and Leading Groups chapters.
Face-to-Face Instruction includes: any video-conferencing platform that allows two-way communication, like Skype, Google Hangouts, FaceTime, Zoom, Go-to-Meetings, etc. Ideally people would be in a physical classroom setting, but we recognize that video-conferencing tools can deliver similar experiences.
Face-to-Face Instruction IS NOT: A webinar, conference call, or video recording that allows the instructor to present information or provide instructions.
Can NCDA Instructors charge any fee they like for their NCDA FCD course?
Instructors must charge a minimum of $950 per student plus the cost of the FCD Student Manual (currently $275). Instructors can include the cost of the student manual in their course for a minimum fee of $1,225 OR they can charge $950 and require the student purchase the FCD Student Manual directly from NCDA ($275 plus shipping and handling). Of course, instructors may choose to charge what their market can bear.
Exceptions: If the FCD Instructor’s job responsibilities include training in-house employees only, minimum pricing can be waived. Student manuals must be purchased for each employee enrolled in the training program.
If the FCD Instructor contracts with an organization to provide one-time FCD Training to a specific group within that organization, the minimum pricing can be waived. However, this cannot be an ongoing contract with rolling enrollment or a training program for outside employees or the public. Student manuals must be purchased for each employee enrolled in the training program.
I see other FCD instructor’s bios and photos online. How do I get my bio and photo online?
To get your bio and photo online, you must first be registered with NCDA as an Instructor. Your master trainer should have provided the FCD Instructor Registry link to you upon successful completion of the NCDA FCD Instructor Training program. If you have not registered as an NCDA FCD Instructor, please complete your NCDA FCD Instructor Registry link.
Once you have registered as an instructor with NCDA, you can upload your bio and photo.
How do I get my FCD Course posted on the NCDA website?
Instructors who are current with their NCDA membership and Instructor Registry membership can post up to 2 courses per month on the NCDA website. We list courses with start dates up to 6 months. Please list your FCD Training Course.
Can I teach students that are not located in the United States?
Yes, you can provide FCD instruction to students located outside of the United States. Please remember to adhere to the pricing requirements and Face-to-Face requirements. Due to the high costs of shipping outside of the United States, we would suggest that you consider having the international student, purchase Online Access to the FCD Student Manual.
I've been told that I need to complete 75 hours of Continuing Education during a 5-year period and must submit those hours to maintain my status on the Instructor Registry. I've also read that I need 30 hours during a 3-year period. Help, I'm confused!
As an NCDA FCD Instructor you are required to obtain 75 hours of continuing education during each 5-year period on the FCD Instructor Registry.
We follow the NCDA Credentialing Commission's Guidelines for Continuing Education. This Continuing Education manual provides details on accepted forms of continuing education as well as the accepted number of hours. Please use this as your guideline when compiling your Continuing Education log sheet to submit at the end of your 5-year Instructor Registry certificate period.
If you hold one of NCDA's Credentials, you will be required to submit proof of 30 hours of continuing education during each 3-year period you hold the credential. The professional development you complete, may be used to satisfy the requirements for both the NCDA credential requirement and the FCD Instructor Registry requirement.
Please note: If you are an NCDA FCD Instructor, you are not automatically awarded an NCDA Credential. If you wish to hold one of NCDA's credentials (CCSP, CMCS, CCC, CSCDA, CCCE, CCSCC) you must apply for those. Please visit the Credentialing website for more information.
