In these times of uncertainty and rapid change, we find ourselves facing daunting challenges that test our resolve. Understanding and processing these changes is a journey, one which the National Career Development Association (NCDA) Board of Directors & Trustees, and leaders across our association, came together recently to discuss and reflect upon.
It is natural to have questions and feel apprehensive. In seeking clarity, we found strength. We recalled the work of Frank Parsons, a social reformer largely regarded as the father of vocational guidance, who believed in the power of career guidance to effect social change. His work underscores the importance of our role in advocating for social justice through career development, and we agree career development is a universal right, encompassing all individuals regardless of background or circumstance.
As a leading scholar and author in the field of career development, Dr. David Blustein has dedicated his work to examining the intersection of career, social justice, and human dignity. We reflected upon Dr. Blustein’s eloquent statement that: “Everyone has a right to a decent and dignified life that includes a meaningful career.” His words remind us that our work is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves access to opportunities that lead to meaningful and fulfilling careers. We thought about our own preparation for the work that we do.
Dr. Mark Pope, a past president of NCDA and Eminent Career Award winner, reminded us that embracing diversity within our career development competencies enriches our profession and the lives we touch. There is an important role for NCDA to play in the teaching of these competencies.
Be assured that NCDA remains steadfast in its mission to provide professional development, publications, standards, and advocacy to practitioners and educators who inspire and empower individuals to achieve their career and life goals—and in its vision for all people to attain fulfilling career and life goals. We will not waver in our dedication to this purpose.
An essential theme of our current strategic plan (2024-2027) emphasizes our unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging (DEIAB). This theme is woven through our association priorities of: (1) cultivating community, (2) career empowerment, and (3) advocacy. In alignment with our strategic plan, we will:
- Champion policies and practices that promote equitable career opportunities for all. (Advocacy and Accountability)
- Equip our members with the tools and knowledge to effectively serve diverse populations. (Enhancing Professional Growth)
- Foster collaborations that enhance our collective impact on the field of career development. (Knowledge and Partnerships)
Together, we will continue to uphold the core values that are foundational to both our profession and our association. This will ensure that our work reflects the rich diversity of the communities we serve, empowering every individual on their career journey.
