Events that Support Continuing Education

By NCDA Staff

Everyone working in the field of career development is encouraged to seek out opportunities to develop and enhance their professional skills and knowledge. Credentialed or licensed professionals are obligated to obtain continuing education. The goal then is to find valuable experiences in consideration of time and funds to complete such requirements. NCDA is equipped to aid this endeavor.

NCDA offers Career Practitioner Institutes (CPI) twice a year, with the most current one scheduled for February 15th in San Diego, CA. These smaller, regional conferences convene for the purpose of:

  • gathering practitioners together for a day-long event at a low cost
  • allowing state CDA leaders, NCDA Board members and representatives opportunities to present to and interact with smaller groups of practitioners
  • showcasing NCDA products and benefits to both members and non-members
  • offering CEUs (continuing education units) to practitioners who seek these
  • convening Board meetings and state CDAs.

The Keynote Speaker kicks off the Institute at 8:30 am Friday, followed by two sets of presentations (with three choices of sessions each). After the lunch (included – lots of networking here!), another presentation series (of three choices) is offered. The Closing General Session caps the afternoon and concludes by 4:00 pm. Two PDI's will be offered on Thursday, February 14th (as an option, with an extra registration fee). For those interested in NCDA credentials, a jump start session will be held during the lunch break.

Here's what past participants have said about NCDA Career Practitioner Institutes:

"I enjoyed everything! Networking was terrific! Speakers were excellent! Location was wonderful. Being able to obtain 13 CEU's in 2 days while having fun, too!"
"Two of the best things about the presentations were the thought-provoking ideas and concepts and the competencies of the facilitators."
"I enjoyed gaining new information and practices to re-energize my work."
"As a new member, this was very beneficial... I learned about the many resources and training opportunities available to me personally, but also those that will be helpful in my work with my students."

The Global Career Development Conference

Creating Career Interventions to Break Barriers: Empowering Lives and Achieving Equity is the theme of the 2019 conference scheduled for June 27-29 in Houston, Texas. Convened by the premier career development association for over 100 years, the NCDA conference is an annual opportunity to learn and earn continuing education units, network, meet leaders in the association and the field, explore a vibrant city, and gain significant professional and personal resources for another year of service to clients, students, and ourselves. The collaborative effort of many individuals and organizations makes this three-day event (or four, if professional development institutes are added on) full of presentations, keynote sessions, constituency and committee meetings, receptions, and exhibitor interactions. Full details are posted on the NCDA website – visit www.ncdaconference.org – including how to register at the beautiful conference hotel, the Marriott Marquis in downtown Houston.

Overall, NCDA received over 300 proposals for presentation, roundtables, poster sessions, and Professional Development Institute (PDIs). From these, the conference program committee, chaired by Debra Osborn, had the difficult job of selecting the most valuable and unique to be a part of the conference. The NCDA President, Spencer Niles, personally selected the following keynote speakers:

  • David Whyte who uses poetry and thoughtful commentary in organizational settings as he illustrates how we can foster qualities of courage and engagement; qualities needed if we are to respond to today's call for increased creativity and adaptability in the workplace.
  • Freeman A. Hrabowski, President of UMBC (University of Maryland, Baltimore County) is an author and consultant who was named as one of America's best leaders. Dr. Hrabowski’s most recent book is titled Holding Fast to Dreams: Empowering Youth from the Civil Rights Crusade to STEM Achievement.
  • Dr. Jane Goodman is past president of NCDA and an NCDA Eminent Career Award winner and Fellow. Her knowledge of international career and education issues, experience in counselor supervision, and approachability are just three reasons to be present for her keynote.

For those interested or needing more, NCDA offers the option to register for Professional Development Institutes (PDIs) for a more in-depth look into specific career topics. (PDIs require an additional registration fee.) The June 26th PDI options are listed here, with complete details posted online.
